I studied in Indo dept from 1988 to 1990, then one year in 1993.  I majored in Indo and studied Balinese.  I was a member of AKSI (Aksi Solidaritas Indonesia) with my other hippy activist friends studying Indo, and I had an annoying habit of traipsing loud jingling ankle bells through the corridors of learning. I feel really lucky to have studied at a time when Indonesian studies were still popular and supported at SydneyUni. Since graduating I have worked at various jobs, including 2 years for the UN in East Timor.  I now teach Bahasa and "Ratoh Duek" (Acehnese body percussion dance) at my local primary school. I also work in Aboriginal Aged Care and still do intermittent work with East Timor.

I studied  at the Department from 1987-1990, as an undergraduate.I came from Adelaide, and the Department welcomed me so warmly. Studying Indonesia became a really big part of the new friendships I made (Bibi, Monica, Emily, Sonya, Melanie, Alison if you are out there, hey!). Thea, as well as the communal reading room space off her office, contributed a lot to making the Department feel like a little community. Our alum. kakak kelas (Robyn, Sue), so accomplished in Indonesia matters, were never far away. And we had such fantastic teachers - George, Michael, alm. Pak Joseph, Soemaryono, Tony, Peter.... That list is not complete, but just rereading it, such a scene seems so hard to imagine these days.
After graduating in 1990, I went to work in a human rights organisation in Jakarta, then a Melbourne based human rights organisation in 1993. It took me ten years to research and write a PhD.  I worked at the Anthr. Dept at Leiden Univ. for a couple of years from 2003, then for QUT on an ARC linkage grant. I am married to Benny, we live in Denpasar and have a daughter, Mei Chelsea. Thanks to Adrian and Michelle to putting on this fantastic event which, unfortunately, I won't be able to attend.

I went to Indoensia first in 1975 on a holiday, and then spent a full year in Semarang in 1977 as an exchange student. I then entered the department in 1978, finishing in 1983. I was there at the time just after Pak Lie, but still managed to hear Pak Simanjuntak sing once in a lecture!!! These were still very lively times at the department (inside and out of class hours!), with Pak Joseph, Pak Soemarjono, Pak Marcus, Michael, Tony, George, Peter, Thea and the all knowing secs, Dominique & Rosemary… I ended up doing language tutoring there too, under the wonderful Jan Lingard, in the early nineties, before moving to Jogja for four years and opening toko buku Bumerang Bejo in Gang I Sosrowijayan (which is still going…) Now I’m to be found on eBay and at Glebe markets on Saturdays selling Indoneisan handicrafts to help feed my large Indo brood…
